Pizza is probably my FAVORITE thing to cook! Making it at home gives it great potential for a healthy and well rounded meal! Here are some things that I do to keep my pizzas healthy and interesting!
The crust of the pizza is important, both nutritionally and for the taste! When I make my pizzas, I actually use frozen 100% whole wheat bread dough. I find this easier than making my own dough, and more cost effective than buying pre-made crusts. It also boosts the nutrition of the meal by using whole grains! Another option that I do when cooking just for one person or if I am in a hurry, is using whole wheat tortillas or FlatOut wraps. The only caution here is that they do cook much more quickly and don't hold up as well with a lot of toppings.
Depending on the pizza I am making, I also use a variety of sauces. I'll post details of the sauce with each given pizza recipe in the Recipe Box section, but one thing with sauce is to make sure you use the right amount. I prefer the sauce to be thick enough that it can be tasted, but drowning the crust with sauce can make the pizza soggy and difficult to eat.
So many things can be cooked on a pizza, the combinations and toppings are endless and I would dare to say that nearly anything can be put on a pizza! With that being said, this is a great way to get in a lot of nutrition (veggies, proteins especially), and create a lot of variety! As a method to keep things a little bit on the lighter side, I prefer to minimize the cheese where I can. I often use mozzarella cheese slices and spread them out, rather than using grated cheese.
